Project Background

Client : A drilling contractor

Project : FEED study looking at certain Through Tubing Rotary Drilling (TTRD) upgrades to platform drilling facilities.

Situation : Competitive tendering for the Project Management and Engineering for an estimated project duration of 101 days.

Èpeus was asked to conduct a review of the project and verify whether the project could be successfully implemented within the proposed timescale of 101 days.

The Findings

The review revealed that significant risks to completion within schedule existed and also identified that certain technical issues had not been addressed by the FEED study. The project model placed a 10% probability (P10) of successful completion indicating that the contractor was optimistic when setting schedule milestones. Risk mitigation exercises were conducted resulting in a re-schedule of the project. This time the output reflected a 90% (P90) probability providing that the new project strategy was implemented.

Project Outcome

Graphical outputs from the model were included in the tender to demonstrate independent verification of their proposed strategy and schedule. Although the contractor was not the lowest bidder they were awarded the work.
